1BZ Offset Disc Harrow in Sudan: 32 Discs, 18–20 cm Deep in Cracking Clay
This 1BZ offset disc harrow was delivered, Sudan, for the 【2025/26】 season. It is a trailed 32-disc machine, 3.5 m wide, cutting 18–20 cm depth into the cracking black clay of Sudan’s central plains — the soil that most disc harrows in Sudan either ride over on top of, or sink into and smear.

What the 1BZ offset disc harrow does differently ?
1. Offset gangs, not level gangs. The front gang throws soil outward, so the machine penetrates on frame weight and gang angle rather than on tractor speed. In dry clay that is the difference between discs that bite and discs that skate. This is exactly the job a disc harrow for hard clay soil has to do.
2. 660 mm (26″) discs at 230 mm spacing, working depth 180–200 mm. Deeper than the shallow passes that created the pan in the first place — so the pass fractures the compacted layer instead of feeding it.
3. Notched front, plain rear. The notched front gang cuts crop residue and cracks the big dry clods; the plain rear gang finishes and levels the surface so rain spreads over the field instead of running straight into the cracks.
4. Hydraulic transport wheels. The discs lift 160 mm clear of the ground for road moves between blocks. On farm tracks between distant plots, this is what stops a trailing frame from being dragged disc-first.
5. Built for heat and dust. Heavy square-tube frame with serviceable, greaseable bearing housings — in 40–45 °C dust, bearings are the first thing to fail, so being able to re-pack or swap them in the field matters more than any brochure figure.
6. Models matched from 50 to 150 hp, so the same frame family covers a Gezira tenancy and a contractor’s fleet.
One honest note: an offset disc harrow is not a subsoiler. On land that has been disced shallow for ten or more seasons, alternate your discing direction each year and consider a deep ripper once every few seasons. Depth, direction and timing — that is what keeps a pan from coming back.

When to harrow in Sudan: the season window ?
| Operation | Window |
|---|---|
| Clear weeds (um bahti) and burn — rainfed | March – May |
| First discing after the first effective rain (kill germinated weeds) | late May – June |
| Second discing + sowing — rainfed (tirab) | June for wad ahmed sorghum; July for tabat |
| Sorghum / sesame harvest | November – January |
| Land prep + wheat sowing — irrigated Gezira | late October – 30 November (optimum 1–30 Nov) |
| Wheat harvest — irrigated Gezira | February – March |
Field rule for the clay: disc when a handful of soil crumbles apart in your hand. If it balls up and shines, it is still too wet, and you are smearing the soil instead of breaking it.
FAQ
Is the 1BZ offset disc harrow suitable for Sudan’s black cotton soil? Yes. It is built for exactly this soil: 660 mm notched discs on a heavy offset frame, working 18–20 cm deep, which is what it takes to break a compacted layer in heavy cracking clay.
How deep should I disc in Sudan, and how many passes before sowing? Work 18–20 cm on the first pass to fracture the layer, then a shallower second pass to level and finish. Two passes are normally enough before sowing sorghum or sesame into moisture.
What is the difference between an offset disc harrow and the wide-level disc harrow used in Sudan? The wide-level harrow levels and conditions the surface at shallow depth and can carry a seed box for combined sowing. An offset harrow penetrates deeper because the gangs are set at an angle and throw soil sideways, which is what breaks a hard layer rather than adding to it.
Do you supply spare discs and bearings for Sudan? Yes — discs, bearings, hubs and seals are stocked as service parts, and we recommend ordering a small spare kit with the machine.
Can it prepare a wheat seedbed in the Gezira scheme? Yes. It is used for autumn land prep ahead of the winter wheat sowing window (optimum 1–30 November), where finishing the block on time matters more than anything else.
